Gay Discrimination Today the problem of discrimination of sexual minorities is of a great importance as Kazakhstan is on the way to more open and democratically developed society.

Two weeks ago Tatyana Lopayan, a representative of Almaty's gay community, was attacked by young unknown people on the busy bus stop. "I was harassed just because I do not smoke," she said. Three unknown teenagers asked her for some cigarettes. After they were being refused, the conversation was continued in a more rude way because the guys did not recognize a girl in her. "Does anyone have a right to hit someone only because of the way he or she looks? I am sure that my accident is not the only one."

There are approximately 100.000 (3%) gay people living in Kazakhstan, said Sergey Skakunov, president of "Adali" NGO that deals with rights of sexual minorities. According to a survey 7 people out of 30 were being discriminated because of their sexual orientation.

A lot of people think that same-sex relationships should be prohibited and punished. However, not all of them can explain the reasons of such a violent behavior. "People think that if they accept gay people as being OK, being normal, being a normal part of society, than other people would think that they are gay," Kristin Ruger, an employee of a rape crisis center, said. However, for Rakhimov Bagdat, a student of UIB, homosexuality is an unnatural thing to do or just a way for people to be unusual.

Psychologists think that patriarchal societies cannot accept the idea of women not wanting to be involved with men; the sexual orientation cannot be chosen, nor changed. "In 1975 American Psychological Association excluded homosexuality from the list of mental diseases," psychologist Sabitayeva Dameli said.

Main reasons why people are intolerant towards gays are: Ignorance. There is not enough information about the issue. Since the information is formed by media in a lot of different ways, it should give more the information in a more democratic way. Prejudice. Especially among people over 25 years old. Mostly it is because of the Soviet regime during which homosexuality was considered to be a crime. Fear of unknown. People are generally afraid of something they are not sure about or do not have a clear idea of.

Heterosexuals attack gays and there is no excuse for that. Why is Kazakhstani society homophobic? Only recently clause 121 of Kazakhstan criminal code was corrected. It does not say that homosexuality is a crime anymore. Moreover, Kazakhstan is the only Central Asian country that has changed it.

Is Kazakhstan on its way to more open society or is it moving backwards?

I think that countries of Central Asia are far from democracy, freedom, individuality. We have the another mentality. There are many unnecessary things like 'ponti'. If u haven't cool clothes, mobile or car, u are not so respective. Also it is with people with untraditional orientation. There is nationalities' discrimination, what we can say about lesbians and gays? Of course, they are discriminated. Kazakhstan's economy develops, but other problems aren't decided. We have dictatorship rules more, than democratic. I don't know when Kazakhstan will come to fair democracy. But I know exactly: Not soon! What a pity!
